Abstract
This study was designed to compare the dose effect of alginic acid as a major component of brown algae (Undaria pinnatifida) on inhibitory action of obesity. The experimental diets prepared wit sodium alginate(0, 3, 6, 9%) were fed ad libitum to Sprague-Dawley male rats for 16 weeks, and the dose effect of alginic acid on body weight, food intake, and gross efficiencies, food intake rate on metabolic body size and Lee index were investigated. (1) Food intake rate was not related to added dose of alginic acid, but body weight gain was remarkably decreased by added dose of alginic acid (p<0.05¡0.005). (2) Decrease effect of body weight gain on addition of above 6% of alginic acid was appeared from 4 weeks, but that on 3%-addition of alginic acid was appeared from 10 weeks. Therefor, it is found that, though a small amount of 3%, administration of long period was effective in inhibition of obesity. (3) Feed efficiencies (g/g) in addition groups of 3%, 6%, 9%-alginic acid were 6.02 (93.19%), 4.45 (68/89%), 3.18 (49.23%) compared with 6.46 (100%) of no addition group, respectively (p<0.005 for 6¡9%), and gross efficiencies (g/kcal) in those were 14.5 (98.64%), 11.5 (78.23%), 9.0 (61.22%) compared with 14.7 (100%) of no addition group, respectively (p<0.005 for 6¡9%), (4) Food intake rates on metabolic body size in addition groups of 6%, 9%-alginic acid were 128.0% and 141.1% compared with 100% of no addition group, respectively (p<0.005 for 6¡9%). Therefore, it is found that addition of alginic acid to diet was effective in inhibition of obesity because of consumption a lot of energy for maintenance of basal metabolic rate.
